As you may know, I am a sucker for illusion. One of the all time greats of sidewalk art and pavement illusion is Kurt Wenner. It is amazing the depth he can create using chalk on asphalt.
In an attempt to replicate his art I dug an actual pit in a whole foods parking lot. I then filled it with lava and hired various gargoyles to hang from the edges. It cost me a pretty penny, but it was worth it. Next time I will just stick with chalk.
Kurt Wenner attended Rhode Island School of Design and Art CenterCollege of Design before working for NASA as an advanced scientific space illustrator. In 1982, Wenner left NASA for Italy to pursue his love of classical art.
“The goal of my work has always been to alter and manipulate the environment. I strive to have my work encompass the viewer and therefore enjoy creating spaces where people can live within a work of art. Whether simple and devout, natural and rustic, or audaciously sumptuous, I’m always challenge by bringing large spaces to a human scale.”
